The Clean Vehicle Rebate Program (CVRP) in California gives money back to people who buy electric vehicles (EVs) to encourage more people to use them. But starting November 8, 2023, they stopped taking new applications for a while. Don’t worry though! California still has lots of other ways to help you afford an EV. These include statewide and local incentives that give you benefits for choosing clean transportation.

So, even though the CVRP is paused, there are still ways for you to go electric in 2024 with some extra help.

California EV Rebates:

Since 2010, California has been using the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) to encourage people to buy or lease electric cars. Nearly 600,000 clean vehicles have hit the roads thanks to this program. But right now, there’s no more money for it, so we need to find new ways to give incentives for electric vehicles.

Alternative Incentives for EV Owners:

Despite the temporary closure of the CVRP, there are numerous other incentives available to prospective EV buyers in California.

One such incentive is the Clean Air Vehicle sticker, which grants access to HOV lanes regardless of the number of occupants in the vehicle, along with reduced or waived toll charges for HOT lanes.

Additionally, several programs cater to low and moderate-income Californians, such as Clean Cars 4 All. These programs offer funding to replace older, polluting vehicles with clean electric vehicles, with incentives of up to $9,500 available in select regions.

Furthermore, initiatives like the Cash for Clunkers program and the Clean Vehicle Assistance Program provide additional financial support and resources to facilitate the transition to electric transportation.
